Scientific Research Contributions:
Prof. V. Bhattacharya initiated clinical research in 1984 and is continuing till date.
The findings and interpretations are of immense value and applied in soft tissue reconstructive surgery.
A brief summary is as follows:
-
Meticulous dissection in old and fresh cadavers precisely demonstrated the
locations of the perforators of the main vascular trunks of the lower limb.
-
Histology, confocal microscopy and Electron microscopic study of deep fascia
demonstrated the subfascial and suprafascial vascular plexuses, perforators,
oriented collagen fibres, nerve axons, lymphatics, capillaries, venules, etc.
required for all physiological functions.
-
Angiography in experimental model and patients, demonstrated longitudinally
oriented vascular network in fasciocutaneous flap.
-
Dye study in fresh cadaver showed the safe haemodynamic limit of retrograde
fasciocutaneous, adepofascial and adepofascial extension of fasciocutaneous flaps.
-
Fluorescein study conducted on experimental model and on various types of flaps
proved its accuracy in peroperative objective assessment of vascularity.
-
A new classification of perforators has been proposed depending upon their
internal diameter based on the findings of Colour and Audio Dopplers.
-
Perfusion Pressure of the Perforators was measured in experimental as well as
clinical conditions and correlated with the internal diameters.
-
After standardizing in the animal model, Live Microcirculation in blood vessels and
lymphatics in the human Deep Fascia could be demonstrated for the first time.
-
Based on above parameters, perforator flaps of various constituents and design were
applied in clinical conditions namely fasciocutaneous, adipofascial, fascial,
split fascial, adipofascial extension of fasciocutaneous, scalitonized flaps, etc.
The purpose of such research is to evolve simple, effective, rational, reproducible techniques
of reconstruction. Such an extensive work has been done totally in our country and has raised
the stature of the discipline. He continues work with his vision and inspires his students
to develop the same spirit. He is a versatile Surgeon, eminent Teacher and an involved Researcher.
